EASTER SUNDAY
We are living in difficult times. Although in our world there are many positive realities, the feeling of frustration, despair, the desire that many things would change is also very real: injustice, corruption, poverty, people who are excluded from society, refugees, the constant abuse of power, the unfair distribution of wealth that prevents the well being of so many people… This situations weaken the hope of a better world, that we all carry in our hearts.
However, our hope is strengthened today as we celebrate the resurrection of Christ: he is the fulfillment of our hopes, for ourselves and for our world, and with him everything becomes possible. Christ is the new Adam that restores in every person the image (and the reality) of the God of life and recreates in us the identity and dignity lost by sin.
In the Passover the person hardened by evil and selfishness gives way, through the new creation, to a new person and to a renewed world. Hope, joy, freedom and brotherhood and human solidarity are possible if we put more effort. The Passover is the great feast of the new life for those who believe in Jesus, who is the source of our hope.
Wow! It seems that in this way everything threatening for us, for our relationships and for this world is resolved. No! The change is not automatic and it does not come about by itself: the change has conditions and demands.
The condition in order to live a new life, so that our hope may become real, is our identification with Christ. It is necessary that we acquire the same sentiments and attitudes of Christ: total self-giving to God, to neighbour and to the construction of a more humane world, fraternal and just.
Jesus has given everything for us, out of love; now it is up to us to make the goodness that we all carry in our hearts a reality. Jesus makes this possible through his death and resurrection.
The new branches of the springtime of Easter have been born from the old trunk of humanity: it is up to us to decide, with our life, whether we want to be part of this Paschal flourishing of the new life according to God. Happy Easter!
