THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem, there he culminates, in this world, his tour giving his life on the cross, giving his life for all of us. Jesus, with his death and resurrection gives us the possibility of having a new life in love; the fundamental characteristic of this new life in Christ is surrender to God and to others following the example of Jesus.
Jesus, last Sunday, invited us to bear our cross, like Him, and to follow him, to "lose our life" in order to "win it". The new life, which is love, lives as offering, leaving ourselves to find God and the others; the cross is the symbol of this path of change.
On the way to Jerusalem Jesus meets some who want to follow him, they put conditions and Jesus' answer is that they have to leave everything and follow Him, Jesus asks total surrender, Jesus tells us that when we follow him we should not to look back, we must look forward , to the new life He has given us by his death and resurrection.
Also, on the way to Jerusalem, responding to James and John, who want to send fire on the Samaritans, he tells them that it is not time of violence or fundamentalisms; those with open heart accept the message and the person of Jesus. St. Paul speaks of love, of service, of giving to others through deeds, not just words. Love our brothers as ourselves, abandoning all selfishness. Love as a summary of the whole law. St. Paul also reminds us that living the new life in Christ must be guided by the Holy Spirit.
Our Christian life is to live in Christ, live by the fruits of the cross and resurrection that give us the real possibility of being new people, having the thoughts, feelings and lifestyle of Christ. All lived in each moment, with each person, in our work, in our presence in society.
The call of Jesus, to follow the lifestyle that this requires, the conversion to which invites us, are a challenge for us; it is not easy to live like Christ, we must accept his cross to live the fruits of the resurrection which are the fruits of the Holy Spirit and Charity. (1st Cort.13 4-8) (Gal.5, 16-25).
Big ideas and big plans are built through small steps, with perseverance, joy, generosity, humility and confidence in the Lord; living the new life of Jesus can renew us and make all things new.
