This Sunday gospel presents three interesting parables, that of the lost sheep, that of the lost coin, and that of the prodigal son.
Jesus during his journey to Jerusalem was followed by many people. Among the people who followed him there were publicans or tax collectors, sinners of all kinds, and also scribes and Pharisees. The scribes and the Pharisees followed Jesus to keep their critical eyes on him. : they disapproved Jesus welcoming publicans and sinners and mixing with them.
Jesus was doing this to show and offer his infinite mercy for our weaknesses. Jesus understands that the mentality of the scribes and Pharisees was formed to observe strictly the law of Moses. The law of Moses was the supreme criterion of justice and perfection, according to this law the Pharisees kept themselves separated from those who ignored the law of Moses, that is, they kept themselves separated from publicans and sinners.
With the first and second parable, that of the lost sheep and of the lost coin, Jesus gives an answer to the Pharisees: they wanted Jesus to reject sinners , but He welcomed them to bring them back to his father's house. Because his father loves everyone and when one of them is converted, there is a big party in heaven.
With the third parable Jesus shows the Pharisees that they have no knowledge nor understanding of the love of God. God's love wants everyone to be saved, no one is excluded. God loves everyone indiscriminately. God's love makes no difference between those who remain faithful and those who walk away and then return to the father's house. True justice and perfection are shown by the love and mercy of the father.
The church has to be like a family where there is no room for discrimination among its members. It is a family where everyone participates in the joy of God. Have a nice Sunday.
