The archdiocese of Freetown is fully determined to awaken its missionary commitment. In fact, yesterday the 27th September 2019, the Archdiocese had an inaugural Mass for the Extraordinary Mission month at the Sacred Heart Cathedral Freetown. The Chief celebrant of the Mass was Most Rev. Dr. Edward Tamba Charles, who is the Archbishop of Freetown. The Mass was colorful with almost all the Priests and Religious working in the Archdiocese, and the Liturgy was also wonderful. It was animated by the various youth groups in the Archdiocese (CYFA, CYO, YCS).
In his homily, the archbishop recalled the Pope's public announcement to the whole Church to designate an Extraordinary Missionary Month of October 2019 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Pope Benedict XV Apostolic letter Maximum Illud and to foster the commitment and the duty of all baptized to announce the Gospel of Christ to all nations and especially to all people who do not know Christ.
As local Church founded by missionaries, the archbishop reminded all the faithful the fact that being baptized means also being sent. He invited everyone present to pray to the Lord for the gifts of the Holy Spirit to be courageous and zealous in bearing witness to the Gospel, so that mission entrusted to the Church, which is still far from completion, may find new and efficacious expressions that brings life and light to the world.
During the Mass, the youth in their vote of thanks gave their pledge of commitment to be ambassadors of the Gospel and agents of evangelization by taking into consideration the Apostolic Exhortation of the Holy Father Pope Francis to the youth, Christus Vivit (Christ is Alive), and to live out the expectation of the Universal Church towards the youths in the world.
At the end of the Mass, Rev Father Abu, the chaplain of the youth, read a brief history about Missionary work in the Archdiocese and also brief history on some of the Missionary congregations in the Archdiocese. Some of these congregations are the Jesuits, S.M.A, the Xaverians, the Spiritans, the Saint Joseph Cluny sisters, the Josephites, the Salesians and the Missionary of Charity sisters.
