Who wins in the “Winner’s Chapel”?

African Christianity landscape is shaped today by the proliferation of neo-Pentecostal churches. In this context, great Catholic and Protestant churches are losing the monopoly of preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the promise of salvation it implies. Christians and non-Christians are attracted presently by neo-Pentecostal churches, which, for most part, promise paradise on earth in a context of growing impoverishment. People go to them in search of things like health, a job, a partner, or even a visa to the west[1].

Non violence: a Style of Politics for Peace

MESSAGE OF POPE
FRANCIS
FOR THE CELEBRATION OF THE
FIFTIETH WORLD DAY OF PEACE

1 JANUARY 2017

1. At the beginning of this New Year, I offer heartfelt wishes of peace to the world’s peoples and nations, to heads of state and government, and to religious, civic and community leaders. I wish peace to every man, woman and child, and I pray that the image and likeness of God in each person will enable us to acknowledge one another as sacred gifts endowed with immense dignity. Especially in situations of conflict, let us respect this, our “deepest dignity”,[1] and make active nonviolence our way of life.

Francis Xavier and the missionary horizon

“Saint Francis Xavier is the model and patron of our Institute which bears his name” (C 2)

The feast of St. Francis Xavier falls at the beginning of Advent. I believe that this is an important coincidence: how much “missionary meaning” is there in Advent? What does a missionary hope for and desire? The essential motive of our vigilance and expectation is the mission of the disciples and the Church in history. The mission allows us to broaden our perception of reality and grasp the meaning of encounters and events from the perspective of the Kingdom of God that comes in Jesus Christ. This is the dynamism of one who positions himself within such a wide horizon that it becomes infinite, and he remains fascinated by a goal that is always greater than his own achievements, constantly nourishing in himself a hope that is Christian, because personal prestige and success are not the criteria by which he measures things. We celebrate the Feast of Francis Xavier with friends, benefactors, bishops, diocesan priests and other religious who accompany us in our missionary activities. We contemplate with them the horizon of the mission, with our eyes fixed on the future that has been made more limpid by the Hope that Advent teaches us, even when the future can cause more fear than desire.

THE ROLE OF THE CHOIR IN THE CELEBRATION OF THE MASS: STILL NEGLECTED AND MISUNDERSTOOD!

50 (Fifty) years after the closing of the Vatican Council (1962-65), which gave the Church a new, renovated, enriched, joyful (potentially!) Liturgy, we must admit that the ROLE OF THE CHOIR - which is vital and essential in our Sunday liturgies - is still badly misunderstood; I would even say "ignored," by the members themselves of the choir and especially by those who are responsible for the preparation and celebration of the Mass.

COULD THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION BE INCULTURATED AND MADE MORE APPROACHABLE AND PRACTICABLE?

The deep crisis of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession, Penance)

Pope John Paul II dealt at length with this topic in his encyclical letter  “Reconciliation  and Penance” (1984).He points to a grave loss of the sense of sin in our time, under the influence of many factors. “Modern man – he wrote – is threatened by an eclipse of conscience, by a deformation of conscience. When conscience is weakened , the sense of God is also obscured, and as a result the sense of sin is lost.”

Father Luigi Menegazzo and the wonders of the Lord

Translated by Fr. Guy-Adolph, sx

I had the chance to accompany Father Menegazzo and Father Antonio Lopez during their last visit to Congo; during the celebration of  the regional chapter. Within a month and a half (March-April 2016), his way of living as a Xaverian, with his sense of humor, his convictions, his joy to know places and confreres’ activities, even those of our departed confreres, with trust when faced with challenges and, with constant desire to find the most suited ways for today’s mission. “Visit to Circumscriptions, he wrote in the last iSaveriani, offers always double opportunity: the meeting of confreres and their apostolate, and at the same time, the meeting of the hand of God that accompanies them since ever.” I would like to highlight some points for showing affection and telling, briefly, the wonders that the Lord has accomplished in the mission he entrusted to Father Luigi.

Our Advent

During these days of expectation and Advent, our Xaverian Family is called to pass through a trial of faith and hope. The Lord has visited us.

The death of our Superior General, Fr. Luigi Menegazzo, places us once again before the greatness and the seriousness of life. Certain moments, certain sad and difficult experiences – such as death – force us to think and understand reality with greater clarity, moving beyond the ordinary superficiality of appearances, beyond a mere “narrative” of life, to a profound grasp of its reality and meaning. Today we remember that our life is a gift, especially the life of a missionary who is convinced that there is so much for which it is worthwhile to die, because there is so much for which it is worthwhile to live: Christ and the proclamation of his Gospel.

50 YEARS AS A PRIEST

Yes, it is 50 years since I  was ordained priest; years have gone by very quickly, mostly in happy situations. Even now when I take the memory post-card of our ordination, I read aloud the names of my superiors and classmates that I see in the picture, and their faces come back to my mind and make me relive emotions, feelings of old relationships and life situations together.
